New Year Promises

New years resolutions are little promises we make to ourselves to improve something - our family, our homes, our lives, in some way. Some we take more seriously than others. Some we are more committed to than others. But with each new year, we have the blessed opportunity to start fresh, with a clean slate if we so choose. What a true gift that is!

For me, some promises resurface year after year...like getting organized (again), or eating healthier (how much salad can a person consume without an eventual rebellion?). But the one that I take more seriously than all of the others is my promise to create, recreate or maintain my sanctuary.

We all need an escape from the imbalances in life - too many deadlines...too little time, too much chaos... too little patience....When I surround myself with beautiful things that bring me pleasure and make me happy I can actually feel the transfusion of inner peace and a calmer spirit. This is crucial to my being able to tackle those deadlines and calm the chaos of my everyday life.

So while I continue on my never ending quest for better time management and improved organization,(and my guilt-ridden promise to eat healthier), I encourage you to surround yourself with things that make you happy, that speak to your soul and give you that inner calm that you need to face each new day, each new year.

Thank you for your continued encouragement and support. I am looking forward to sharing more ways, products, and ideas this year to help you live and lead a beautiful and more peaceful life.

"Shabby Hearts"

I have been busy stitching up a storm. With my recent feature in Romantic Homes Magazine - August 2011 issue - "At Home with Trisha Evans", I am humbled at the many requests I have received for my Shabby Star pillows. Because of the detail work involved in creating these sweet art pillows, it is taking a bit longer than I would like to get more of them posted. I have been tweaking the designs and have started making "shabby heart" shapes.

Please let me know what you think. I have added the items pictured below in my Etsy shop today. (my website is undergoing some much needed updating.) I have quite a few pillows in various stages of completion and will post those as soon as I can complete them. Please keep visiting my site/etsy shop to view new pillows posted each week.

This "Shabby Heart" Pillow (above) features vintage laces and buttons, seed beads and various embroidery stitches. It measures 10 inches and I suspect will not last long. This is really one of the prettiest pillows I have ever done.

Smaller "Shabby Hearts" with exquisite detail featuring Swarovski pearls and crystals. Intricate embroidery stitches - ruching - vintage buttons.

I have been fascinated with the fabric flowers out there and decided to try making them. I am so pleased with the result and think that the shabby flower only adds to the charm of this vintage-inspired art pillow.

While waiting for spring...(that's my story and I'm sticking to it) I find myself looking (ok, shopping) for items that will get me one step closer to my organizational goals. Of all my jewelry, my favorites are my pearls, but they do present a problem when storing because of their bulk. I came upon these jewelry boxes from Pottery Barn and especially love how they would blend so nicely into my creamy white bedroom.

Love the hardware on this piece - it gives it a slight rustic feel. (This looks like a sturdy little bugger)

This jewlery box is a bit more subdued and has an elegant 40's feel to the design.

A perfect piece for storing fine, feminine pieces. As beautiful as this piece is (and it is!) my pearl collection would never fit in those tiny compartments. (so sad)

This set has possibilities, but I would have to have them spanning the top of my dressser to store all of my pearl necklaces, bracelets and earrings.

I love this idea and have the perfect frame and fabric for it. Now all I have to do is find the time to put it all together. (stay tuned)

Organizationally, this case would certainly solve my problem. My bulky pearls would majestically hang from appointed hooks. However, it too appears to be a bit small for the job. I would tweek this design just a bit to increase size and maybe give it a more elegant look.

I thought this was sweet. A graceful metal branch serves as an earring "tree" (oh yes, I did)

Various mirrored trays keep things neat, but I would prefer to use some creamy china plates or bowls instead. (They hold more!)

This sweet birdie bowl is a charming example of blending storage and display.

I may have to use a combintion of these pieces to store and display my pearl collection. My problem isn't totally solved but I did enjoy "shopping" for ideas.

Tiny Treasure Pillows

I have been busy creating these precious tiny treasure pillows. The pillows themselves measure between 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 inches across. Some are tasseled while others are dressed in floppy bows. Each has an attached ribbon loop at the top for hanging this sweet treasure from a doorknob or hook. I have a few hung from push pins on the bulletin board in my office - I love having beautiful treasures around me for inspiration.

Such a sweet treasure! The heart pocket on front is embroidered with flowers and beads. This heart has a crocheted edging and a custom glass bead. The loopy bow at the bottom of the heart brings the total length of this treasure to 15 inches long.

Another similar (but never exact) tiny treasure features a heart pocket on the front.

Perfect for a love note or tiny gift. (A diamond ring would fit perfectly!) I have added vintage buttons, beads and silk ribbon.

Yes, I am partial to pink, but who wouldn't love this treasure pillow? This beauty has an embellished heart pocket on the back and features porcelain roses accenting the gorgeous trim on the front along with being tied to each of the trailing ribbons.

I have never been a big fan of blue but I am slowly appreciating the color. I love how this turned out with the ruffled flowers and sweet bluebird on the front.

A tiny treasure pocket is featured on the back. Hmm, blue isn't so bad afterall.

I wanted to try using this delicate shade of green. I added vintage laces and buttons along with some beading. The heart treasure pocket on back is the perfect hideaway for a love note or spoonful of potpourri.

More Shabby Stars

I have been stitching away and have just finished three more of my shabby stars. It seems the more I do of them, the more beads and laces I seem to add.

They are quite labor intensive but I enjoy every second of creating these beauties.

Both Tessa and Bella have parts in the class Nativity production so I will be busy making costumes for them. Therefore it is doubtful that I will be adding more stars before the holidays!

However, I am working on finishing up a few of our precious Tattered Teddy Bears and hope to have them up in the next week. You are gonna love them! Wishing you an enjoyable holiday shopping season!

Of all of the items ever offered on A Vintage White, our shabby stars have been the most popular.

They sold out last year at the holidays and I received so many requests for them to return. I am happy to say that they are coming back! I adore creating these little pillows embellished with vintage trinkets, ribbons and lace. If you look a little closer you will see tucked between the finery, sprinkles of glass beads. adding a subtle iridescent sparkle. Each pillow is one of a kind and signed by the artist (me)! Serenity through Shopping

I am (forever) on a quest for serenity. I need that stillness to calm the chaos that lives in my mind. (You know what I mean don't you? Can you hear it too?)

Every once in a while, when stillness eludes me, I find taking a "virtual" stroll through my favorite online shops helps transport me to a calmer place. (and I so love the fact that I can get there without traveling, searching for parking, or considering rush hour traffic etc.)

Have you ever noticed that "shopping" is so much more enjoyable when you are not really "shopping" at all? When the pressure to find "just the right thing", in "just the right size", gives way to a peaceful experience of viewing exciting, new things. The key to finding that "calm" for me, is by (only) looking at things in my favorite (soft) colors or (shades of) white.

(This cup and saucer reminds me of a cable knit sweater.)

It doesn't matter if it is housewares, clothing or furniture. I am bathed in tranquility when I imagine those items decorating my life. (and in case you were wondering, although sorely tempted, I don't purchase every piece I see - sometimes just placing them in my thoughts is enough - that's my story and I'm sticking to it) What a peaceful feeling to be surrounded by things that you really love, that silently communicate your personal style.

I have posted pictures of some of the lovely things that I came across during my latest leisurely virtual stroll through Anthropologie.

I love the damask motif bath rug (pictured above)...and it comes in both white and cream. (I am feeling calmer already, how about you?).

The intricately carved wood frame makes this mirror a stunning statement piece. (hmm, where should I hang this piece - entrance or hallway?)

TIn switchplate covers - it's those interesting details that define style. (lack of interesting details define the need for a virtual shopping trip ;0)

Whisper light sweater (but needs a fabric flower brooch).

A subtle lace detail is added to the placket of this basic henley. Minimum effort for maximum style.

Have you found tee shirts are just not long enough? I may add lace detailing to the front of mine and echo the treatment at the hemline - making it longer on style (oh yes I did.)

Pretty, pretty.

(Have you noticed though, how a lot of sleeves are styled for long monkey arms or it is a giant conspiracy with stain remover companies that benefit from cuffs dipping into your lobster bisque?)

I admit, I have always been into ruffles in a big way. I am a ruffaholic.

I saw this worn under a jacket with jeans. Adorable. (in an actual photo, not in my mind this time.)

Simple, comfortable style and lace details. (Dear Santa, please bring me one of these)

Just plain pretty to look at.

Bought these for my daughters to wear, or to lay gathered in a wooden bowl for decoration. (win-win) ;0)

Escargot earrings. Nice detail and size. (Almost makes me forget my disturbing childhood experience with escargot..... not really)

I adore pearls. You can never have enough - at least that's what I tell my sweeties.

Can't bear to think of the fact that they come from slimey oysters. (Did I ever tell you that my first pair of pearl earrings came from Sea World - another story for another time)

Crystals on the other hand come from heaven! The ribbon is tied by angels. (not really)

I especially love when they are coated with aurora borealis (these aren't but I won't hold it against them, mainly because angels tied that bow they are wearing).

Loving the shades of these earrings. Subtle but sparkley - like stars.

Sweet eyelet leather belt. Wish it came in a lighter tan (and with a waistline to fit it).

A lace necklace too pretty to store in a drawer or jewelry box. This is one of those pieces that needs to be used in a display in your home where it can be enjoyed daily.

I encourage you to take a little time to surround yourself with (at least images of) things that bring you serenity. (Ironically it brings with it, an inner energy that gently fuels your style and soul.)

Enjoying the Finer Things - Beautiful New Items Coming

I have been on a constant search for beautiful items for our Linen Luxuries department at A Vintage White for quite some time. But I have been finding that there is virtually nothing fresh, new or exciting out there for us and really hasn't been for some time. A bit dismayed, and while still working on our exclusive design line, I decided to search among the talented cottage business owners around me. After weeks of searching and studying and comparing products, I was thrilled to have found Susan.

Susan makes the most beautiful, quality products and her presentation is always stunning. She produces her product with such care and attention to every detail. We are very excited to be offering Susan's items and know you will love these as much as we do. Although she was quite busy, we were able to have her create some lovely things going into this holiday season. We will be offering her jewlery pouches and closet safes. Susan's products fit perfectly into our plan of offering our customers the finer things, those extra special, beautiful items that enhance your way of life (and charm others in the process). You know, those things that you may not have thought were essential but add such feelings of pamered extravagance that they become essential to your well-being?

Running Samples

After a very busy weekend I am finally back in the studio doing one of my favorite things - running samples.

We are adding a line of private label layette items for baby at AVW and are putting together the fonts and motifs we will be offering. All items we carry will be offered only in white but with delicate, pastel embroidery. (We are in the process of setting up our etsy store where we will be offering more colorful designs by way of applique and brighter thread choices.) As soon as I had seen how this design sewed out, I could not wait to run to my blog and post a picture for you! I hope to have the site set with these new designs by the end of the week. Spring is finally here! There were days when I thought it would never come! I was bound and determined to post some inspiration today since I have been down with a bug for almost 3 weeks now. I spent my entire birthday with a fever and chills in bed. (I am NOT counting my birthday this year because of it!) Today temperatures should reach 65 and the sun is already peeking out from behind a few puffy clouds. It's going to be a very good day.

Today's inspiration is about accent colors. The premise of the "A Vintage White style" revolves around neutral basics (whether it be tans, creams or whites). With each new season I love to change out my accessories with an accent color to breathe new life into my surroundings. The thought behind my style of decorating is that basics will serve you for quite a few years and if they are a non-neutral color, I find myself tiring of them after a short while and then either having to doll out a lot of cash to replace them or worse yet, living with them after my mind and heart tell me I am over them (brutal). So I invest in good basics in neutrals and add seasonal accent colors (I choose pale colors) to freshen it up. Seasonal accents are usually less expensive and are so fun to shop for. Above you will see that I put together a composition with my favorite accent color of blush - a soft blend of pinky peach. In future posts I will be adding compositions with various other accent colors to show how versatile and refreshing decorating with the basic "A VIntage White style" can be.

I Love Letters

I love letters, it is in my DNA. As a child, I was lucky to help my uncle at his printing business. He had a quaint stone shop in the back yard of our home. I remember he worked tirelessly, day and night and it is from him, that I learned responsibility, the importance of following directions, and the unrivaled feeling of satisfaction from a job well done. "Up the shop" was where I was exposed to many typography styles which led to my viewing all letters in an artful way.

Combining different font syles gives a more expressive and "personalized" monogram.

My first exposure to mongrams were the tiny little "F's" that were sew on my uncles dress hankerchiefs. It honed my eye for noticing embroidered letters on fine linens. How I would admire their elegant beauty. In later years I was able to combine my "letter love" with the artful sewing skills taught to me by my Mother and Aunt. I have been involved with sewing monograms for well over 30 years and even now still experience delight at anything monogrammed.

A two-letter monograms is nested in vines.

It is with that devotion that last year, I decided to forego all other creative endeavors and concentrate solely on developing my (Trisha Evans Designs - A Vintage White) business lines. I have been stretched in so many directions for so long and just needed to simplify my life and give my creative spirit flight (instead of more deadlines). I will be introducing custom monogram designs and exclusive products for vintage-inspired living. While I am thoroughly enjoying every step of the process of designing and digitizing my own monogram fonts and motifs, I am inspired by some wonderful styles from other designers. I am combining a few of my favorites here, to exemplify what I see as the changing look of traditional monograms.

We are working with various suppliers and workrooms to bring you some wonderful new products to showcase your custom monogram choices while still reflecting the casual elegance of time-worn style. It is my hope that letters will one day too become my legacy as they have with my uncle. I love you (Uncle) Chilly for it is to you that I owe so much, most especially my love of letters!

I wanted to share the inspiration for my holiday decorating this year. Simple and elegant with sparkle and shine!

I love the sparkle of crystal. Is there a more elegant or simple garland than this with satin ribbon and large glass ornaments? Gone are the days of the lush garlands encrusted with fruits, flowers and ornaments. Less is so much more!

I love to set a pretty table. It adds to the festive atmosphere and will make your guests feel really special. So set a pretty table, especially if it is just for you!

Flowers are a must on any holiday decorating list. Fresh flowers are especially welcome during the cold wintery months. They remind us that spring is sure to return.

An easy garland and wreath decorate the armoire. The fresh green garland frames the window in lieu of draperies.

Almost There

I have been keeping late hours, and actually early hours too, getting things ready for the Grand Opening of the shoppe. I have sewn, embroidered, pressed, beribboned, trimmed, and glittered until the wee hours keeping the list making (and crossing off) for early morning when my mind is clear and my coffee is hot.

This has been an interesting fall season, laden with rain, colder than normal temperatures and flu. But I find myself renewed each day in the excitement of this new venture. What a perfect time of year to present our collection to you. Because the dreary and cold weather will not really matter in a few weeks when we are all busily searching for the perfect holiday gifts for our friends and family. We will brave the weather, traffic and even the economy to create yet another memorable holiday season. I find such inspiration on so many blogs and try to visit my favorites often. I have been following Sepia Dreams' blog Dream in Cream for a while. The name itself intrigued me and the blog posts and pictures kept me coming back for more. Now Sepia Dreams has started yet another fabulous blog called The French Mannequin. When I stumbled upon it a few days ago I was blown away by this particular project.

Having Wine and Cheese with Pottery Barn

I am not a big fan of the Fall season, and although I love to decorate, doing so for fall is a challenge each year. Craving change at the end of summer, I search far and wide to find the right accesories that will give my home a more autumnal feel without succumbing to the overuse of the expected oranges and greens. (blah)

While doing research (gotta love a professsion when "shopping" is considered "research") I came across this wonderful selection of entertaining and serving pieces that fit right in with the season (or any season for that matter). Pottery Barn is featuring fabulous baskets and warm woods this season. Above is a pizza cutting board that also serves as a platter or display.

This wine barrel tray makes a great cutting board for a sumptious fruit and cheese display. (Did I mention I love cheese?) My mind is already working on how I would adapt it for use in other seasons or with other themes. This fabulous rustic element will "soften" the overall feel when used with more formal pieces like vintage silvers or other metals.
Of course, if your wine and cheese party will include an assortment of different cheeses, then these porcelain markers and cutters are a necessity that will save you from answering the question over and over again - "what kind of cheese is this?".

Do not, I repeat, do not give in to using disposable napkins. This is the perfect opportunity to use your lovely heirloom cloth napkins - and they add so much charm to the setting - truly "a vintage white".

I thought these little pedestals were adorable and are a wonderful way to add height and interest to your table display. The warm wood tone works right in with the fall season and can replace the typical oranges, browns and greens normally seen in a fall display.

The colors and textures of woven baskets fit right into a fall theme and are great for keeping things organized.

They are at home in any room of the house, just waiting to be used for storage, serving or display.

Consider using lidded baskets as end tables that double as storage pieces - a great way to keep throws and blankets concealed when not in use. Imagine all the things in your home you would like accessiblity to but are otherwise visually distracting - storing them in baskets may be the perfect solution.

Summer Vacation

Vacations take us away from the frantic pace of everyday life. They relax and calm us, rejuvinating our minds and refueling our spirits. (now who couldn't use some of that?) I have found the most fabulous place to take my summer vacation this year (all without the help of a travel agent) and am excited to share it with you.

I longed for someplace tranquil, but I really didn't want to travel too far. I couldn't be away too long and in light of today's uncertain economy, cost would have to be a factor. So I asked myself, "where would I most like to be ?".... and as always, (being a Pisces) "by the water" was my first choice. So, in July, I will be taking some time, to just relax.

I will be visiting (inside) the wonderful pages of the newly published book by Barbara Jacksier entitled "Waterside Cottages" (now, doesn't the title alone suggest the most serene of settings?) It is here where I will kick off my shoes, curl up in my comfy chair and experience sheer waterside bliss (and with no mosquitos). I look forward to enjoying the beauty of nature, while visiting the lovely homes of those fortunate people (whom I call "lucky ducks" ) who live by the water. I will gather decorating ideas as plentiful as the shells I have picked up on previous beach vacations and without a single grain of sand in my shoe. The cost is minimal (around $25) and I can return there again and again, at my whim, to revisit the calming atmosphere and quiet solitude.

Also while on vacation, I plan to be stopping at Barbara's charming new shop Waterside Cottage Styles.

Barbara Jacksier has best been known for her work as editor of many well-known decorating magazines (Country Style, Romantic Country, Country Victorian, to name a few). Wanting to fulfill a dream of writing her own books, she has teamed with talented photographer Dan Mayers to bring us this wonderful gift of ultimate tranquility. I encourage you to treat yourself to a well deserved vacation this summer, and visit Waterside Cottages. You can stay as long as you like, and even take some inspiration home.

Decorated Salt Shaker

Since the week has gotten by me, and I have just posted the winner of the decorated salt shaker, I wanted to back track and give a description of the prize.

I found these salt shakers on my excursion last week and immediately saw the possibilities! I filled the glass base with a special blend of a vintage white pixie dust and then wrapped the neck with a creamy rayon ribbon. Adorning the ribbon is the most precious hummingbird charm, Austrian crystals and a Swarovski pearl. Tied into the bow, I added a beautiful crystal button. To balance the sparkle, I tied a sweet Swarovski bead on the end of each ribbon, one a pearl and the other a crystal drop.

I love how this little pretty twinkles in the light and hope you do to. Congratulations to Ember for being the winner of our June Giveaway and a special thank you to all who posted!

I Hit the Mother Lode

I just knew that I would find something at the Covered Bridge Festival yesterday - just had that feeling. I think that is why I figured that I better stop at the bank before we left - just in case. Well I do believe I hit the mother lode.

I found a beautifully refurbished chandelier that is the perfect size for my dining room. I have been shopping for the right one for a long time but hesitated buying one before actually seeing it to get the true dimensions. My dining room is small and I did not want anything too overwhelming. This is creamy and (did I mention) perfect!

I also found quite a few mirrors to add to my collection. I now should be able to create my "feature wall" of framed mirrors for the staircase. I love how mirrors can enlarge a space just by what is in their reflection.

I stumbled upon vintage salt and pepper shakers that I plan to "dress up" and offer as my giveaway for tomorrows blog party. I will be posting pictures later. I also scored some fabulous furniture pieces - a gorgeous coffee table and uber-fabulous chair. (You should have seen my husbands face when he saw me carrying yet another chair). I have such high hopes for this sweetie, and may even use her as my office chair. Unfortunately I cannot post her picture because she is in a dark wood and I need to spruce her up and give her a coat or two of paint - white paint. The other items are still at the shop as I could not take them with me yesterday. But as soon as I get them home and in their chosen spaces, I will show you all of them in their refurbished glory! What a great score, what a great day!

I am always on the lookout for beautiful vintage white linens and found quite a few yesterday. There is one monogramed and embroidered cloth that I will be posting about. It is a very interesting piece but I am not sure exactly of it's purpose. Maybe one of my blog friends can help me figure it out. Look for that next week!

I think I may have joined the ranks of the "die-hard" antiquers. I can already feel the addiction building. So this is what "they" have been buzzing about all this time - getting up early on weekends in search of treasures, driving through towns and stopping at each tag sale or resale shop on the path, and finding just the right pieces to define your home with your own vintage (white) style. Yep, I think with all of my new goodies and a new found hobby, I have hit the Mother Lode!

There are not many blogs or websites out there in that are as devoted to white as we are, so when I come across one that truly delights me, I immediately think of (you) my blogging friends, and how you would react to knowing that such magical places exist. I am happy to share with you one of the places that really touches my soul.

I have visited her site and beautiful blog, admiring her many talents. She truly has the eye of an artist! Her mediums vary from art, to photography, to web and digital design. I am beginning to doubt if there is anything she is "not good" at. She is Alice Wingerden of Painted White.

How many people do you know, that can translate vintage style so effortlessly through paper and tiny wooden spools?

And then package them up with the utmost care in order to capture the essence of "time-worn" style.

She is a not only a master in design, but is so very skillful in selecting the most wonderful treasures for her web shop. I was so lucky to get this beauty from her before it was gone! Lovely things never last long especially at Painted White!

I am such a fan of Alice's photography. I remember a photo she had available quite a while ago that had watch faces and shimmering crystals. It was vintage beauty personified, but alas, I dragged my feet and it was gone. I still think about that photo. :0(

The talent however, does not end with Alice in the Wingerden household, as her husband (St.) Joshu a designs the most incredible jewelry pieces crafted with vintage elements. Look at this fabulous ring from watch parts! What an amazingly creative atmosphere there must be in that home!

Em's Heart

It's no secret that I am extremely fond of vintage linens and lace, and I couldn't resist showing you this exquisite piece.

It is yet another rare vintage find (and unfortunately already sold) from Em's Heart.

This antique needlelace runner is an extraordinary piece of Venetian needlelace and contains 4 scenes depicting a couple in period dress that changes from scene to scene.

The urns of flowers are in needle and hand made net lace. It is trimmed with a Reticella needlelace. From the Late 19th century.

I know why these gorgeous pieces never last long at Em's Heart. If you are a lover of linens, as I am, stop by and vist Em's Heart.

Lauren Ross, is an interior design from Austin, Texas and was featured in Country Living Magazine a few months back. She truly lives in the "a vintage white style" so I thought it would be inspiring for you to see a few of her rooms.

I adore everything about this bedroom. It appears to be a blank canvas of neutral and white, but when even a wee bit of color is introduced, it brings the design to life. The vintage dress form and bed pillow are used to marry all elements and unify the look.

The skirted sink and covered lamp shade add that extra touch to an otherwise nondescript bathroom.

Such a charming dining area. I purchased the same chairs from Anthropologie. They help set the tone for the room. Of course the massive french style mirror reflects it's own good taste.

I have such a soft spot for monograms and this chair really touches my heart. Look how darling the "ballet slipper" ties look wrapped around the chair legs.

Imagine how cozy it would feel to relax in this comfy family living area. Slipcovered furniture pieces make it easy to freshen the look. I love the white slipcovers and would only remove them for laundering. If you wanted a bit of color, I like to introduce pale shades of seasonal colors in my accessories and change them out every few months. This keeps your rooms looking fresh while still maintaining the "AVW style".

My Romantic Home - Centerpiece Party

I am so excited to be able to take part in one of Cindy's parties. You must check out her beautiful, inspiring blog at My Romantic Home.

I used some of my favorite things to create my Valentine centerpiece. What romantic vignette would be complete without flowers, lace and candlelight? After lining a rustic wicker tray with a vintage damask napkin, I added delicate hydrangea and ranunculus blooms, and a very special cherub statuary, some pearls (always a favorite) and vintage rhinestone jewelry pieces for a wee bit of sparkle. My favorite vintage lace hankie graces the side of the tray and the carved heart soaps add romance along with a heavenly floral scent. Happy Valentine's Day to all my blog friends and a sweet thank you to Cindy for including me in her event.

While I was saddened to hear the news of Rachel Ashwell and her Shabby Chic company filing for chapter 11, I am not really in despair. You see, true success is never measured in dollars. Rachel Ashwell has already achieved true success through inspiring millions of women across the globe. Time inevitably brings change, and while the suffering economy has caused us all to reevaluate our lives and spending habits, this too shall pass. Change can be a very good thing. So I do not for a moment believe that Rachel Ashwell has lost her way, I do believe she is now on a different path to what is sure to be another glorious destination!

Thinking Ahead to Spring

Yes, it is just about that time of year, when the snow flies (and lays) and the temperatures drop to bone-chilling degrees when I set my sites on Spring and all the happy things it brings. One of my favorite things to do is look, via the internet, for new varieties to add to my sweet little rose garden. It is nothing grandeous by any means, but it does bring me such great pleasure. This year I am thinking of adding more creams, whites and delicate pastels with just a hint of color.

This gorgeous rose is by Jackson and Perkins and is called Windermere. I love it's lush round shape and divine color.

What is not to love about this full blown beauty also by Jackson and Perkins named John Paul II ? This rose has such presence that I can see it making a gorgeous display just floating a single bloom in a low dish. I am definitely adding him to my list.

This particular rose just blew me away. It is called Honey Dijon and is by Weeks Roses. The petals appear as though they have a velvety texture because of the variance in colors.

Moondance by Jackson and Perkins is beauty - pure and simple. Soft creamy color, delicate scent, just blissful.

And whose garden could not use a little intrigue with the show stopping beauty of the Marilyn Monroe rose from Weeks? This rose demurely adds soft tones to your garden.

Another variety from Weeks that suggests soft color is Sunset Celebration. A soft creamy base blushes with sublte tones of peachy pink. (the perfect combination).

The crunch is on. Christmas will be here in just 10 short days. I have been (happily) tied up with preparing items for a Charity Christmas Tree Auction - and tonight is the night. I love being busy with creative things. So I while I have been joyfully creating, I am also very happy to see this event come and go. I can then devote the last few days before the holiday to fine tuning my decorations at home, wrapping my gifts and even baking a few cookies. This is the part of the season I really enjoy, when all the "work" is done and the fun begins. Wishing you and yours a happy holiday!

During the holiday season I love to burn candles but like to incorporate them into a display to maximize the effect of the comforting glow. I found this wonderful assortment of candle holders at Illuminations. What a striking display it makes. It will work nicely into any home decor but is especially striking when combined with other elements of a vintage white style.

I love the reflection of flickering candlelight and always try to incorporate it onto my tabletop. I have become particularly fond of floating candles because you have the calming element of water and light, which seem to play beautifully off of each other.

When floating candles are not practical or available, I opt for placing candles into glass cylinders or candlecups to keep the flame contained. These frosted ones with etched snowflakes are sure to warm even the frostiest winter chill.

As a self confessed lover of lace, these candleholders would have to be my favorite. They can be formal and romantic or when added to a more simple setting, they can create their own drama.

For a truly special table, add a candle to each place setting. This will unquestionably tell your guests just how special they are to you.

Whether you choose to use a candle here or there, or en masse, be sure capture the glow of the holidays with the relaxing flicker of candlelight.

Ballard Designs has long been one of my favorite places to shop. I have selected a few items from their holiday catalog to share with you, that I feel evokes the a vintage white style.

This incredible carved crown makes quite a statement. A large piece like this on a coffee table with a few candles is really all that you would need to make a striking display. Here are the candles:

I am having a really hard time choosing which of these two wall clocks will work best for my space. I love the aged vintage feel of this one but...

there is something about the creaminess of this one that calls to me.

I will resist the temptation to buy both. ;o) Mainly because I spied this fabulous piece that I must have! A vintage inspired Santos.

Then onto statuary. What do you think of these? I love them for inside or out.

Dear Friends,

After a particularly difficult summer, I am back to posting. Not wanting to drag you through the horrific details, or re-live them, just let me say that our sweet little Bella has been encountering serious behavioral issues which has led us to therapy visits twice weekly since July. We continue to take it one day at a time but are grateful that we are finally seeing some improvement. She has issues that are normally seen in institutionalized children not those who have been in foster care. We were assured and trusted that her every need would be met the seven months she was in individualized care. We have since learned this not to be true. So being unconditionally committed to the needs of this beautiful child, that we waited so long for, we will continue to do everything in our power to get her to where she deserves to be - happy and well adjusted.

So please forgive my unexplained absence. I look forward to reconnecting with you, my sweet blog friends. Thank you for the kind concern of those that have continued to check in on me, and a deep and heartfelt thanks for lifting my spirits and helping me to get through this very disheartening and difficult time.

I do not like dirt, or grime and I especially do not like cootie bugs. (notice I said nothing here about clutter - not that I like it, but that I do have it). So I have been torn. I have been wanting a vintage dress form for quite sometime and have been searching diligently for one. I have found one on ebay but... is it only me? Does the thought of where it's been (and I am not talking in a history sense) and the cootie bugs it may have accumulated, make you squeemish?

I have seen the beautiful work done by some artisans who paint their dress forms bringing them back to their antique beauty ( and I have loved them) ...but what about cooties? Now maybe I am making more of this than needs be, but the thought of bacterias and "micro-ooganisms" from years past gives me the creeps. I am ALL for vintage beauty, ALL for it, but in cases like this, I am all for brand new too. So I think, unless you convince me otherwise, that I will be purchasing this vintage inspired dress form from one of my favorite places - Pottery Barn teen.

I can paint on her, antique her, and I certainly plan to "dress" her in flowers, pearls, ribbons and jewelry. But at least my mind will never revisit the visions of old cootie bugs breeding on her. I do realize that someday she too, will be an antique but at least I will know where her cooties came from.

Now that the world wide web is here, I prefer to do my shopping from the comfort of my desk chair. My nephew Christopher is getting married in July and I was looking for a dress. But while visiting some of my favorite websites, I found some fabulous shoes (my downfall). Shoes have always been my downfall. I remember when my nephew Mark was young and he walked into my closet and then later asked his Mom if it was a shoe store. It was of sorts. MY shoe store. And as the years passed and my dress size got a bit larger, my shoe size was the only thing that remained the same. So in celebration of shoes (lol) I am posting a few pair that I found at Spiegel. Loved their catalogs and merchandise for years! So here we go!

Crocheted open-toed pumps! Wow! I am not sure how supportive they would be, but they are shoes - who thinks about comfort when buying gorgeous pumps of any kind? Comfortable pumps (to me) is a contradiction in terms.

These hot little numbers may just be the ones that I purchase for the wedding, if I get the bronze dress that I was looking at.

I am intrigued by texture and these crochet high heeled sandals caught my eye. If I was 20 years younger they would be in MY shoe store.

Love, love, LOVE these shoes. They have texture that I like, with lace that I adore. What a sweet little pair of gems to wear around the holidays! I may have to see if they have my size. But even if they don't, I have planted a seed and may embellish my own suede shoes for this years holiday season.

After much fret, worry and yes, I admit, complaining......I came across an absolute angel who has offered to help me with getting this site up and running. She heard my lament and came to my rescue and I will be forever indebted to her! She is Erica of Meadowstreet. She designs and manufactures the ultra fabulous silk and ribbon roses that you will soon find at A Vintage White.

Old Dog, New Tricks

When I decided to open up "a Vintage White" I had no idea how much work and how many obstacles I would encounter in the preparation. So please forgive me for the delay. I am an old dog, (hopefully) learning new tricks with various aspects of programming a website, taking and resizing pictures, etc. I have to tell you, this stifles my creativity and wastes my time. I do not want to be a website developer! I want to show my wares, I am a vendor at heart. I like bringing beautiful things together in unexpected ways. I am a designer with a keen appreciation for beautiful things. Codes and directions and tutorials are NOT beautiful things to me! I am not good at it, I don't even want to be good at it! Please bear with me as I overcome the challenges of being an old dog and learning the new tricks that are involved in opening this site. We will all party at the grand opening!

What is Taking So Long?

A zillion apologies my dear friends. I had all intentions of having the new website up and running smoothly by now. But early in the year I had computer issues and as hard as I tried not to, I lost many of my files, embroidery and otherwise and found it necessary to purchase another computer. This time I went for a MAC so as not to succumb to another computer virus. I had to halt the website design until I could redesign some things and change a few others around.

A few days ago I sent all updates to Cathy of Avalon Rose and am anxiously awaiting the completion of the site. If you have never visited her website you are in for a real feast for the eyes. She is an absolute master at scrapbook style website designs and as you can see from her portfolio, she can create in various design styles. I have admired her work for the past few years and knew that she would be the person to put it all together for me.

So please bear with me, and know that as anxious as you are to see the new website... I am even more so. Thanks for visiting our blog and please keep checking back.... we have many exciting things in store!

Elegant Entertaining

Every year the school my daughters attend hosts a Fashion Show and Chinese Auction Event. And every year (so far) I volunteer to coordinate the basket or display for their grade. In the past I chose a decorating theme for the display and found myself lugging in lamps and rugs and a piece or two of furniture. Each time the display was set, people would rave about it, which made me excited for the next year and determined to find something to top it. This year, my sore back and I struggled with the theme and finally decided to do something different. I chose elegant entertaining. I went to Macy's to look over the new Martha Stewart pieces. There were some nice things there and I picked up a few, but was drawn to Lenox table linens, serving platters, bowls, candle with glass chimney, huge creamer and sugar bowl. I found crystal salt and pepper shakers and a five piece crystal serving set. This table setting would work for a family gathering or hosting friends, it is classic in color and versatile in style. there are additional pieces that can be purchased to work with the ones I have featured.

I took a few quick shots when I had everything laid out to see what all I had purchased. I love it. I love the color, the style, the scale of the pieces. Now I have to remove labels, iron the table linens, arrange the flowers - details, and then pack everything up to transport to the event hall tomorrow morning bright and early. (I hope I remember to turn the clocks back tonight). I hope everyone likes it as much as I do and that we get a lot of bids on it for the school. I know I will be bidding on it and not wanting to sound selfish but I would love to win! Now the question is, if I don't win....will I have to buy the entire set for myself? hmmmmm.

Here is just a little hint of what I have planned for a vintage white. I am still working on the photos so bear with me. If you have any EASY photography tips, please post here. lol. Remember I said easy, please do not talk to me of things like shutter speed etc. because I would not even know where my shutter is. ;0) It's all point and shoot for me!

A Hint of What's to Come

No, I haven't been away. And thankfully, I haven't been sick. I have been very, very busy. After clearing up my computer issues, (my fingers are crossed while typing that) I have been busy completing the design, and tending the details, for a whole new look for a vintage white. With the overwhelming response from other lovers of vintage white, I knew it was time to open a designated site for all the things that we love. With it, I wanted to capture the feel of what a vintage white is and could be to all of us - in our homes, our wardrobes and our lives - not too stuffy, not too pristine, but comfortable, livable, with it's own sense of elegance - a relaxed elegance. So get ready. I will be posting more in the next few days as we ready the site for completion. And don't worry, having very little patience myself, I hope to open the doors to a vintage white very, very soon.

I am trying my best to pick up on any little twinge that I get of Holiday Spirit, because we have had a couple of rough weeks lately. But as I sit here, organizing my thoughts about decorating for the upcoming holidays I am getting a rush of excitement. I have chosen this years holiday theme to be "I'm Dreaming of a (Vintage) White Christmas, and I have so many wonderful ideas to carry out the theme..

I theme almost everything. It gives me a focus, a direction. My approach or style is usually a traditional theme with a few "twists" or surprises. And it all just seems to flow effortlessly once I get started. So I will go about and "do my thing". I promise to stop back with updates and photos as quickly as I can. Back in the Swing......

Well, I am back in the swing of things....sort of. After my days in the hospital and a week of outpatient tests - CT scans, scopes (easy breezy) chemical stress test etc. they now believe it is my digestive system.....So I can now look forward to more "hoses" and tests to follow in the next few weeks. I am very grateful that it was not my heart, especially given my family history. So, what this all means is that I am back and although I do not yet have a concrete diagnosis, I am feeling a lot better. I want to thank you all so very much for the lovely emails and blog posts wishing me well and praying for my quick recovery. I am very touched by your kindness and compassion.
This past week I was all ready to post the results of my "First Aid Kit Giveaway" but came down with the flu and was back to bed for a few more days. But not before I got a chance to "borrow" the random number generator from Violets are Blue to at least pick a winner. ..

Blog Giveaway - First Aid Kit "Trisha Style"

This past week, by surprise, I spent some time in the hospital for chest pains. Since there is a history of heart attacks in my family on both sides, they took great care in finally diagnosing that it was not my heart. They are now suspecting it is my esophagus, and are relating it to the tearing, ripping pain in my upper back, that I had last week when I choked on a small crumb of bread. This pain was "off the charts" and I had two separate episodes very close together. So next week will be filled with Dr. visits and testing, including the dreaded scope! ( I sincerely hope they will be feeding me valium, hours before this test to calm both me and my hyper gag reflex.) I am not looking forward to any of it but have no choice in getting it taken care of. It hurts to eat and when I do it feels like what those pictures look like, of a snake swallowing something whole - like it is blocked there. eeek. And there is constant pressure. The best case scenario is that I can drop a few pounds in the process. :0)
So if you would be so kind to think a good thought, or say a short prayer that this "doctoring" all moves quickly and I can be back blogging away really soon.
Now, since I will be lonely and feeling down, I really could use a cheery thought or two. So, I am going to have a blog giveaway for a "first aid kit -Trisha style" (and be assured that it WILL include chocolate) . The person who is kind enough to take the time to send me a cheery post (and is selected by those random selector thingys) will receive the "kit".

Pure Inspiration!

When I first came upon these gorgeous pieces at Shabby Fufu, I was in awe. What a creative use of vintage buttons! And the fact that they are all in shades of white made them all the more appealing to me. I have a vast collection of never used vintage white buttons and love to have them displayed in platters and jars around my home. But to incorporate them into a mosaic was just too ingenious for words.

These pieces are just a sampling of the exciting things at ShabbyFufu. Janet has a way of finding the newest, freshest products on the market to offer to her customers on her fabulous site. Many of the items she offers, are born of her own creativity. I admire her ability to discover or invent new, fresh product ideas in an otherwise stagnant market fraught with replication. ShabbyFufu is an original, and I cannot wait to see what she has in store for all of us with the upcoming Holiday season!

Do You Ever......

....get the feeling that you are a little off-kilter? (not sure what that really means either?) It just seems to sum up how I feel some days, when I am not really on top of my game. Today was one of those days. Wait, who am I kidding...this was one of those weeks. I wish I could isolate it into just 24 hours. Now maybe I am being a little hard on myself - it has been said you know. But if I am not hard on myself then how can I hope to achieve the things my soul needs me to achieve and in the time frame my head is dictating.

I am working on quite a few projects. They are a still in the creating phases where I am gathering all of my thoughts, notes and sketches. But I have been working non-stop on these projects., and when I work like this, I feel like I am neglecting other things (like maybe laundry and grocery shopping?) lol. So I feel "off-kilter". Unbalanced (of course that may have been said before too, lol) I so wish I could find a balance. Balance could free my mind for more creativity. But alas, no balance - no "kilter".

I also put some time into getting my ideas together for a banner for this blog. It is not totally finished but I will leave it up for a day or two just to "live with it" so that each time I post I can look at it and critique. Once it moves past the critique phase it goes into the "tweak" phase of making any minute changes to what is "off kilter". And I DO know that the banner that I have up now, is in itself "off-kilter". I will try to correct that as soon I can figure out where in the world to begin. HTML and all of that crazy googaly moogaly fries my brain and in itself throws me "off-kilter". So please bear with me as I move along on my never-ending quest to finding my "kilter". And, if anyone has seen it, or has found theirs, please contact me! :O) I could really use the help.

I have collected quite a few amazing photos from Flickr and was so anxious to post them on my blog for you to enjoy, however after spending many hours trying to save them as favorites, I cannot for the life of me figure how to get them into a gallery. I think my first problem is that they need to be tagged. But, you see, I can't find the info on Flickr that I need to get this job done. If any of you know how to do this and are willing to help me, I would be more than happy to send you a special gift! I so what to share these inspiring photos with you, so please help!

A Work in Progress

I have been working on this little ditty for quite a while. I was inspired by the photo copied onto fabric. And with my love of vintage white decided to make a pillow using vintage damask upholstery fabric. I love the weight and depth of the texture in it. I framed the graphic in ivory lace and then add tiny aurora borealis seed beads to reflect and compliment the blue in this piece. I then added other lace motifs and trims and a few sweet buttons. To tie it all together, I embroidered some ribbon roses in a soft blue tone also using the ribbon for running stitches on the opposite corners. I am making final additions to this piece and then will put her up for sale. I absolutely love the way that she turned out, and would love to keep her, but I am fighting the impulse. I hope to have some "sisters" available for her soon, and in other accent colors. Just know that the predominant color will be a vintage white. I will let you know when I have them available.

Magnificent Lace Fan

This fan was up for auction on ebay and sold today for $860.00 - worth every penny. The detail on the lace is spectacular and the mother of pearl boning is just magnificent. If I would have won the auction (no, I didn't even bid) I would have an equally magnificent custom frame constructed for it and hang it in a place where I could enjoy it every single day. Items like these are so hard to find and deserve to be cherished if not the superior workmanship but for their history. I was so thrilled to have come upon this auction merely for the sheer enjoyment of seeing something so beautiful and am happy to know that anyone who would spend $860 for it would honor it's value.

This gorgeous shawl is an antique handmade Belgian Duchesse bobbin lace fichu of superb quality is frothy and elegant and nearly perfect. c.1860's - 80's. It is one of the stunning pieces that are on display at EmsHeart.

This item has been sold but if you are a lace lover, as I am, you must check out her other offerings. A real feast for the eyes.

Where Do You Find Inspiration?

foremost by color. I find myself more and more intrigued by varying shades of a color - it's hues, tones and tints.
But my fascination with white began I am inspired by many things but first and years ago with a book by the visionary women of Victoria magazine. At Home with White. I fell in love with the combination of white and all of it's personalities. I started collecting a few pieces of vintage linens, noticing some had aged with a soft creamy glow or blue gray cast. But weren't these still white? Little did I know that I would start on a journey of studying white and all of it's simple excentricities.

I discovered the paint chips and folders available from paint companies showing all of their "white" paints. Some were close, but no two were exactly alike.
I noticed the interplay of "color" when a vintage linen piece was monogrammed in a thread shade similar but not exactly. Just a hint of difference.
